080706_tung_ping_chau_island_adventure

Tung Ping Tsao, a little island close to the China border, can only be reached by one ferry a day. We went for a little diving and beach fun, but heavy rain surprised us and interrupted our plans a bit, but we managed to discover some other interesting things on the island anyway.

080705_urban_safari_5_tai_po

Tai Po is a little town out in the New Territories, and by little I mean about 150,000 people live there probably. Anyway, some parts of it are really rural and sleepy, with winding pedestrian streets, and buildings blending with the jungle.

080701_urban_safari_4_democracy_delay_no_more

July 1st is the annaversary of the handover of Hong Kong from the British to the Chinese, and so is a holiday now. The pro-democracy demonstration was something of a celebration too, really relaxed compared to other political deomonstrations, a "polite protest," very chinese.
20080701-DSC03413c

080628_urban_safari_3_ShamShuiPo_to_CheungShaWan

This was somewhat of a misadventure. Our original intention was to set out to Tseun Wan, but in the process if got dark and then some loopy road layouts led us to turn around, leading us to exactly back where we started!!! But that's not the point: got to see some nice stuff, some interesting buildings and spaces.

080609_cheung_tsao_island_adventure

Cheung Tsao is a small little island that Stevie, a friend from work, lives on. There are no cars on the island, and it's something of a tourist zoo for the Hong Kongers, but it's got a relaxed feel. We rented a trike, and set out with olo driving, but although he was not drunk, he managed to crash the bike into some fixed objects no fewer than three times.

080608_the_polish_beach_crusade

Sunday set out to the beach at Tai Long Wan, which involves a hike. Met up with Wojtek and his brother and his brother's girlfriend, got some seafood in Sai Kung after. Wojtek had never had scallops before, explaining to me that the Communists in Poland wouldn't allow that kind of thing... So it was a nice culinary adventure for them.

080607_urban_safari_2_in_KwunTong

After the jam session, we wandered around Kwun Tong, looking at the buildings and the innfrastructure, quite a brutal environment with some nice qualities ater all.
20080607-DSC02882

080607_rockin_in_KwunTong

After a wild night at 99 Sense (this little private club in Sheung Wan that is basically some guy's house that operates as a speak-easy on the weekends) that featured some abstract-expressionist rapping from Olo to my beats on the drums, we wanted to continue jamming, and so went to Kwun Tong the next day to jam at this music studio in some old industrial building there. Olo had some trouble coming up with rapping material since we were lacking in alcohol, so he read from the pages of the economist, which needless to say produced some very unique sounds.

Olo is 28 now, this is the office celebration and the beginning of a long birthday-weekend of various types of partying...

080601_safari_to_aberdeen

Hybrid urban-natural sarafi. Started out in Wan Chai, got some cheap chinese noodles, in the market, set out over the hill. Ended up in Aberdeen on the other side of the island.

080531_urban_safari_1_TsimShaTsui_to_ToKwaWan

The first in the urban safari project. Got started a bit late since I dropped by the office this saturday to check on some renderings that I had running, so didn't get to go too far... Saw some nice stuff, some beautiful things, beautiful buildings, take a look:
20080531-DSC02313

080525_sunday_in_admiralty

Some time goes by with nothing happening, feel frustrated by that, but got to take some time on Sunday to chill out by just walking through the city a bit, places that I normally go but this time with a different eye. Had this idea to start doing some "urban safaris", that is a hike through random parts of the city with no destination in mind, just us and the sea of chinese people around me that I am separate from, like being alone in the jungle.

080520_a_bad_week

Don't know why, but this week was not the best, feeling down, work not good, but managed to find some nice moments towards the end...

080507_a_stroll_to_HK_art_expo

Walking in Hong Kong is a unique pleasure, always something interesting. After eating duck-rice at this famous old place with this creatively-repaired table, we went to the Hong Kong Art Expo, an traveling exhibition for of various international art galleries. A Some really interesting work there, though unfortunately I have no pictures of it.

080507_another_RAD_week

A typical week in the office... Work dotted with lunches, and ending with a really stiflingly hot evening drinking in the park, no more energy to go out,. though also feeling that's ok since the pace in this place is too fast sometimes...
20080509-DSC01786

080503_shoes_and_weekend

A mellow day just doing some errands with my flatmate, buying shoes and also paying an arm and a leg for some architecture books... some interesting sights, trying to record many of my favorite or unfavorite buildings.

080504_leisure_activities

South Bay beach, really relaxed hot day, one of the first nice ones since the winter, if is can be called that here. Water's quite pleasant, swam around a lot, checked out the beautiful girls, got a bit burned, getting tired on the beach from doing absolutely nothing.

080419_chai_wan_party

Party / Art exhibition in the warehouse in Chai Wan. Some good oil paintings, typically (for China) overly-honest non-tongue-in-cheek paintings however, featuring for example a painting of a horse galloping... Good party though.

Long exposures on the roof of my apartment building... So bright with all the light from the city. The roof is a nice retreat.

080405_in_Shenzhen

Bizarre psychedelic weekend in Shenzhen. After a party in Wan Chai, headed to the Rox club across the border for some deep house from DJ Moore, was awesome really, but in a weird setting of locals playing drinking games and passing out from ketamine. Beautiful women in shenzhen... In the morning, got to experience a little taste of America at Walmart and Starbucks and Pizza Hut, which are everywhere in Shenzhen, but felt bad about legitimizing these place with my gwai-lo presence.

The Ching Ming festival. You're supposed to burn paper effigies as offerings to your ancestors. The polish guys made some paper Zubrowka (their favorite vodka brand) bottles, and we made our contribution.
